What is an MCP server for ClickUp?
ClickUp sees itself as a “work OS” — tasks, projects, documents, time tracking and chat in one tool. An MCP server for ClickUp makes exactly this data foundation addressable for AI agents. Via the Model Context Protocol, a model such as Claude, GPT, Gemini or Copilot talks to your workspace in a standardised way — it reads and writes tasks, lists and docs, without needing a separate DIY interface for each AI.
The good news for ClickUp: you do not have to build anything from scratch here. ClickUp runs its own official MCP server at https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp, which, according to the ClickUp developer docs, connects to MCP-capable AI clients exclusively via OAuth. There are also established community servers (for example by taazkareem or imjoshnewton on GitHub) that leave more room for self-hosting and tool selection. Which variant fits your security and hosting requirements is an architecture decision — not a programming task from zero.
Typical users are agencies, product and project teams, consultancies and fast-growing SMEs that already run their project management in ClickUp but are suffocating under manual upkeep.
In one sentence: ClickUp + MCP means you say “In the sprint list, create three tasks for onboarding, assign them to Lena, due Friday” — and the agent does it, logged cleanly, instead of you clicking through spaces.
Use cases: what can a ClickUp MCP server do in practice?
- Task creation from free text From an email, a meeting transcript or a voice note, the agent creates structured tasks — with name, description, priority, assignee, due date and tags — and files them in the right list.
- Project status on demand “What is overdue in the ‘Relaunch’ space this week?” The agent filters tasks across spaces and lists, groups by status and assignee and delivers a short situation summary — without anyone clicking views together.
- Routing & triage of new tickets Incoming requests are created as tasks, assigned to the matching list based on content and keywords, prioritised and assigned to a person in charge. The agent fills in missing required fields or asks.
- Stand-up and weekly reporting Instead of a Friday click marathon, the agent generates a weekly report per space from task movements and time tracking — done, in progress, blocked — as a ClickUp doc or comment.
- Searching & condensing docs The agent searches ClickUp docs (specs, SOPs, meeting notes), answers questions with source references and suggests updating outdated passages — approval stays with a human.
- Cross-tool bridge New deal in the CRM, new lead in the inbox, new commit in the repo — the agent mirrors the event as a task in the matching ClickUp list and reports back when dependencies or dates collide.
How the integration works
Architecture for ClickUp:
AI agent ↔ MCP server (official or self-hosted in the EU) ↔ ClickUp Public API (REST/JSON, v2/v3, OAuth 2.0)
Concrete technical steps:
- Choosing the connection: The official ClickUp MCP server (convenient, OAuth only) or a self-hosted server for full control over hosting location and tool scope. We recommend one based on your compliance situation.
- Plan for call limits: With the official server, every tool call counts. Without the “Everything AI” add-on, ClickUp allows, according to the ClickUp developer docs, 100 calls per workspace and client in a rolling 24 hours on the Free Forever plan, 300 on Unlimited, 1,000 on Business and 5,000 on Enterprise. For agents that read many tasks, this means: query in a targeted way or run your own server in front of the Public API, for which its own rate limits apply.
- Authorisation: The official server uses OAuth exclusively — you authorise the desired workspace via the consent page. Self-hosted can alternatively be run with a personal API token. Tokens are stored encrypted, with rotation.
- Tool mapping: We define or configure MCP tools such as
create_task,update_task,get_tasks,list_spacesorsearch_docs— each with a JSON schema, validated inputs and clear error messages. - Map the hierarchy cleanly: ClickUp thinks in workspace → space → folder → list → task. The agent has to resolve these levels correctly so that tasks do not end up in the wrong list. Important: in v3, the former “team” is now consistently called “workspace”.
- Separate read and write: By default the agent reads and creates drafts; changing status or deleting tasks can be tied to human approval — configurable per tool.
- Logging: Every API action is logged with timestamp, trigger and change, so it stays traceable at any time what the agent did.
Practical sketch (anonymised, realistic — not a specific reference): A digital agency has incoming customer enquiries created automatically as tasks in the right project list and pre-prioritised. The team starts the day with a sorted list instead of an overflowing inbox — the upkeep happens in the background.
GDPR, hosting & security
Honesty is appropriate here: ClickUp is a US provider, and your project data sits in its cloud. That does not rule out GDPR-compliant use, but it requires the AI layer to be set up cleanly. With every MCP server for ClickUp, we therefore pay attention to:
- EU hosting of the MCP layer in self-hosted operation (Hetzner or the Azure region Germany West Central (Frankfurt)) — the data flow between agent and API does not leave the EU unnecessarily.
- Data minimisation: The agent gets only the fields and spaces it needs for the task — no blanket access across the whole workspace.
- AI provider with EU data residency and a data processing agreement (Claude via AWS Bedrock in the EU region Frankfurt, Google Vertex AI in the EU, OpenAI Enterprise EU or Azure OpenAI in an EU region).
- Keep OAuth scopes tight: Only the permissions actually needed instead of full access — and a defined revoke path in case access is to be withdrawn.
- Check for personal data: Where tasks contain real names or customer names, we clarify in advance what the agent may see and what is masked.
With this architecture, AI processing runs at a provider with EU data residency; the project data itself stays with ClickUp. If you use the official ClickUp MCP server, ClickUp also runs the MCP layer — then EU hosting applies only to the AI side.
What does it cost?
ClickUp is one of the rewarding MCP projects, because the API is well documented and a ready-made foundation exists with the official server. With the official server, your ClickUp plan belongs in the planning, because it limits the number of MCP calls per day. In concrete terms:
- First use case clearly defined, then step-by-step expansion — usually task creation or status reporting as the entry point.
- Clear scope per use case, no hours roulette. Scaling after that in small, clearly defined steps.
We give a reliable figure in the audit — depending on scope (which spaces, which tools), on whether it is the official or a self-hosted server, and on whether further systems dock onto the ClickUp bridge.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an official ClickUp MCP server?
Yes. ClickUp provides its own official MCP server (mcp.clickup.com/mcp, OAuth only) that connects to MCP-capable AI clients. Depending on the plan, ClickUp limits the number of MCP calls per 24 hours. There are also mature community servers on GitHub that offer more freedom in self-hosting and tool selection. In the audit we check which variant fits your requirements.
Which ClickUp objects can the agent work with?
Via the ClickUp Public API, the agent reaches tasks, lists, folders, spaces and docs as well as comments, tags and time tracking. That covers practically all everyday project management processes.
Does the MCP server authenticate via API key or OAuth?
The official ClickUp MCP server supports OAuth exclusively — your own API keys or auth tokens are not possible there. Self-hosted community servers, by contrast, often work with a personal API token. We choose the route that fits your security requirements.
What about the ClickUp hierarchy of spaces, folders and lists?
The hierarchy is mapped cleanly in the tool mapping, so the agent always creates a task in the right list. In the newer v3 API, the former “team” is uniformly called “workspace” — we take care of that during setup.
Can ClickUp + MCP be used in a GDPR-compliant way?
Yes, if the AI layer is set up cleanly. ClickUp is a US provider, and your data sits in its cloud. We minimise personal data fields, run the MCP server in the EU when self-hosting, and use an AI provider with EU data residency and a DPA. With the official server, ClickUp runs the MCP layer itself.
Which AI models work?
All MCP-compatible models: Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Switching models does not require a new integration.
