What is an MCP server for monday.com?
Filtering boards, retyping column values, posting status updates, clicking back and forth between workspaces: in monday-driven teams, exactly this manual work eats hours every day, and every report starts with someone clicking a dashboard together. A monday MCP server solves this by connecting AI agents (Claude, GPT, Gemini, Copilot) to your monday account through the open Model Context Protocol. Instead of building a separate script for every new AI integration, the agent talks directly to the monday GraphQL API through standardised MCP tools: reading boards, creating items, setting columns and writing updates.
Important context: monday itself offers a hosted MCP server at https://mcp.monday.com/mcp. According to the monday developer documentation, you connect to it via API token, your own OAuth app or dynamic client registration; its tool calls count towards your account's daily API limit. For pure monday actions, it is a good starting point. As soon as an agent needs to work across boards, combine monday with other systems (accounting, CRM, email) or needs its own business logic and granular board permissions, an own MCP server in the EU is worthwhile, with the logic that actually maps your processes.
Typical users: agencies that manage projects in monday, sales teams with monday CRM, and operations leads who manage tickets, onboardings or SLAs in boards. Anyone who uses monday as a single source of truth does not want to keep clicking, filtering and updating columns, and this is exactly where MCP comes in.
In one sentence: monday.com + MCP means a request arrives by email or form, the AI agent creates the matching item on the right board, sets the status and owner, posts an update, and answers on request how the pipeline currently looks. EU-hosted, with an approval step and logging.
Use cases: what can a monday MCP server do in practice?
- Item creation from emails & forms A request arrives in the inbox or via a web form. The AI agent extracts the relevant fields, assigns them to the right board, creates an item and fills in status, priority and owner column, without manual retyping.
- Status roll-ups & reporting in natural language “How many deals are in negotiation this week?” or “Which projects are past their deadline?” The agent reads the boards, aggregates across groups and columns and delivers the answer, instead of someone clicking dashboards together.
- SLA escalations & deadlines The agent checks due-date and status columns, detects items that are breaching their SLA, escalates to the owner via an update or raises the priority, staggered by severity and waiting time.
- Cross-board search “Where does customer Müller appear?” The agent searches several boards (sales, onboarding, support) and delivers a consolidated view that is otherwise scattered across several workspaces in the monday UI.
- Combined agents: monday + CRM/accounting When a deal in monday is set to “Won”, the agent creates a contact in the CRM and an invoice draft in parallel. This is where the added value of your own server shows; see also MCP server for Salesforce and MCP server for bexio.
- Update & communication routines Weekly status updates per project as an update post, reminders about open tasks, automatic notes from linked Slack threads: the agent keeps the boards up to date without the team maintaining them manually.
How the integration works
Architecture overview for monday.com:
AI agent ↔ MCP server (your EU host) ↔ monday.com GraphQL API (OAuth 2.0, API v2)
Concrete technical steps:
- OAuth setup: You authorise the MCP server once through the monday OAuth app. Tokens are stored encrypted on the EU host, with a rotation and revocation strategy.
- Tool mapping: We define MCP tools such as
create_item,update_column_values,query_board,change_status,create_update. Each with a JSON schema, validated inputs and clear error messages. - GraphQL pipeline: The monday API is GraphQL-based, with complexity and rate limits. The server converts tool calls into efficient queries/mutations, caches frequent reads and batches writes so that limits are not exceeded.
- Read vs. write separation: By default, the agent reads or creates drafts; write actions on critical boards require human approval, configurable per board.
- Granular board permissions: The agent sees only the boards and columns that are approved for its task. Sensitive workspaces (e.g. HR, finance) stay out of reach.
- Logging: Every API action is logged with timestamp, triggering event and diff.

GDPR, hosting & security
monday.com is a vendor headquartered in Israel and stores data on AWS in a US, EU or APAC region. According to monday support, the EU data region is available for Enterprise accounts and for Standard and Pro accounts created from 23 January 2023. Customer data is held exclusively in the EU only for Enterprise accounts in the EU region; for Standard and Pro it may also be processed in the US. monday generally stores credentials, user profiles and usage analytics in the US region. To keep the chain designed in line with data protection requirements, we look at the following for every monday MCP server:
- EU hosting of your own MCP server (Hetzner or Azure region Germany West Central), so the intermediary layer runs in Europe. Where monday itself stores the data depends on the plan and data region of your account.
- monday OAuth tokens encrypted on the EU host, with a rotation and revocation strategy. A compromised token can be revoked immediately without reconnecting the whole monday account.
- Webhook and API payloads filtered: Data from sensitive columns (e.g. salary or applicant columns) is masked before it is passed to the AI model, instead of passing on complete item objects.
- DPA (data processing agreement) with the AI provider with EU data residency (Claude via AWS Bedrock in the EU region Frankfurt, OpenAI Enterprise EU, Azure OpenAI in an EU region).
- Data minimisation: The agent sees only the boards, groups and columns it needs for the task, with no blanket access across all workspaces.
- Role and client separation, if several teams or customers run through one monday account.

What does it cost?
Thanks to its clean GraphQL API, monday is one of the systems that integrate well. In concrete terms:
- First use case clearly scoped, then gradual expansion, typically starting with item creation from emails or status reporting.
- Clear scope per use case, no hours roulette. Scaling after that in small, clearly defined steps.
We clarify the concrete figure in the initial consultation. It depends on the number of boards, the write actions you want and whether the agent should combine monday with other systems. More on the approach: MCP integration with the agency and having an MCP server developed.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need my own MCP server at all if monday offers one itself?
For pure monday actions, monday's hosted MCP is often enough. As soon as an agent needs to work across boards or combine monday with accounting, CRM or email, your own MCP server in the EU is worthwhile, with additional business logic, caching and granular permission control.
Which monday API does the MCP server use?
We use the official monday.com GraphQL API (API v2) with OAuth 2.0. We map boards, items, columns and updates as clean, validated MCP tools.
Can the AI agent create items and change statuses itself?
Yes. Write actions such as creating an item, setting column values or changing a status are possible. For critical boards we recommend a short approval step before the agent writes; the time saving is still high.
How does the MCP server handle monday's GraphQL API limits?
The monday API works with complexity and rate limits. The server respects them, caches frequent queries and batches writes so that the agent runs reliably and does not hit limits.
Can monday.com be used with MCP in a GDPR-compliant way?
Yes, if the setup is right: your own MCP server in the EU, an AI provider with EU data residency and a DPA (data processing agreement), and data minimisation per board. At monday, customer data is held exclusively in the EU only for Enterprise accounts in the EU data region; monday stores credentials and user profiles in the US.
Which AI models work?
In principle any model that supports MCP, with the boards staying connected in the same way. In practice we work with Claude, GPT, Gemini or Copilot and choose per use case the model that is most reliable for monday tasks such as item extraction or status evaluation. A later change of model runs through the same integration, without a new connection.
