What is an MCP server for Shopify?
An MCP server for Shopify is the bridge between your AI agent and your shop. Via the Model Context Protocol, the language model gets standardised tools to read shop data and — after approval — change it: look up order status, check stock, maintain product descriptions, answer customer questions. Instead of building a separate script or a Zapier hack for every new function, all MCP-capable models speak the same interface.
Important in practice: Shopify offers its own official MCP servers. For the buyer side, Shopify provides MCP servers based on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) at /api/ucp/mcp: browse the catalogue and retrieve products, manage the cart, check out and answer questions about policies and FAQs, for example for an AI chat front end. Shopify has removed the former catalogue and cart tools of the Storefront MCP at /api/mcp (Shopify docs, as of October 2026). The Customer Accounts MCP for customer accounts continues unchanged. The Shopify Dev MCP gives AI tools access to developer documentation and API schemas, not to shop data. For the actual back-office automation of orders, stock and master data, we additionally connect the official Admin GraphQL API — because the official MCP servers alone do not cover cancellations, stock corrections or bulk product maintenance.
In one sentence: Shopify + MCP means the agent knows your catalogue, your orders and your stock in real time — and handles routine replies and maintenance tasks without you clicking through the admin back end.
Use cases: what can a Shopify MCP server do in concrete terms?
- Order & shipping status on demand "Where does order #10482 stand?" The agent reads the
Orderobject includingfulfillmentStatus, tracking number and payment status and drafts a ready-made customer reply — also as a draft for your helpdesk. - Stock & availability check "How many units of SKU X are still in which warehouse?" The agent queries the
InventoryLeveldata per location and reports when a bestseller drops below the reorder threshold. - Product maintenance & copy The agent creates new
ProductandProductVariantrecords as a draft, writes SEO titles and descriptions, sets tags and collections — you review once and publish. - Customer service with context Via the
Customerobject, the agent sees order history and open cases and can prepare typical requests — returns, address changes, invoices — instead of an employee opening several tabs. - Returns & cancellation preparation The agent recognises the request, checks deadlines and order data and creates a refund or cancellation as a draft — confirmation stays with a human.
- Reporting & revenue overview "What were the top 10 items last week?" — "How many open orders have not shipped?" The agent pulls the figures directly from the shop, without you exporting reports.
How the integration works
Architecture for Shopify:
AI agent ↔ MCP server (your EU host) ↔ Shopify (Shopify's UCP MCP server for catalogue/cart & Admin GraphQL API for back office)
Concrete technical steps:
- App & token setup: We register a custom app in your shop with tightly scoped access scopes (e.g. only
read_orders,read_inventory) and store the admin token encrypted on the EU host. - Tool mapping: We define MCP tools such as
get_order,list_orders,check_inventory,create_product_draft,get_customer, each with a JSON schema, validated inputs and clear error messages. - GraphQL instead of legacy REST: Since the REST Admin API changeover, the connection runs via the GraphQL Admin API. We pay attention to the current, quarterly versioned API release and use bulk operations for large catalogue jobs.
- Separating read and write: By default the agent reads and creates write actions only as drafts. Publishing, cancelling or stock corrections require human approval — configurable per tool.
- Rate limits & webhooks: We respect the GraphQL cost limits and use webhooks so that the agent reacts to new orders instead of polling.
- Logging: Every API action is logged with timestamp, trigger and diff — traceable down to the individual order update.
GDPR, hosting & security
Shopify is a US provider — so the shop data is not in the EU by default. That is exactly why the data flow chain around the MCP server is decisive. In every Shopify MCP project we pay attention to:
- EU hosting of the MCP server (Hetzner or the Azure region Germany West Central in Frankfurt), no US edge in your own infrastructure.
- DPA with the AI provider with EU data residency — Claude via AWS Bedrock (EU Frankfurt region) or Google Vertex AI (EU), OpenAI Enterprise EU or Azure OpenAI in an EU region.
- Data minimisation: The agent receives only the fields and scopes a task needs — no blanket full access to customer data.
- Token hygiene: Admin token encrypted, with a rotation and revoke strategy; separate tokens for read and write paths.
- Handling personal data deliberately: Customer emails and addresses are processed pseudonymised wherever possible — the agent sees only what it needs for the specific task.
This is how processing runs from your MCP server onwards: via providers with EU data residency and a DPA; the shop data itself continues to be processed by Shopify.
What does it cost?
Thanks to a clean GraphQL API and the official MCP building blocks, Shopify is a comparatively quick MCP project. Concretely, that means:
- First use case clearly delimited, then step-by-step expansion — typically order status information or a stock check as the start.
- Clear scope per use case, no hours roulette. Scaling after that in small, clearly defined steps.
- Extensible: A helpdesk connection, OCR for supplier documents or an ERP sync can be added modularly.
We name a concrete figure in the initial consultation — depending on shop size, order volume, desired tools and whether write actions such as cancellations or stock corrections are included.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have an official MCP server?
Yes, several: for the buyer side the UCP-based MCP servers at /api/ucp/mcp (catalogue, cart, checkout, questions to the shop), plus the Customer Accounts MCP and the Shopify Dev MCP for developer documentation. Shopify has removed the former catalogue and cart tools at /api/mcp. These servers are not intended for full back-office automation. For orders, stock and master data maintenance, we additionally connect the official Admin GraphQL API. We clarify this difference right in the audit, so you know what works out of the box and what we build.
Which Shopify objects does the agent address?
At its core Product and ProductVariant, Order with line items and fulfilment, Customer and the InventoryLevel data per location. Which of these the agent may read or write, we define precisely through the access scopes.
Can the agent change or cancel orders?
Technically yes. In practice we recommend that the agent first prepares write actions — cancellation, refund, stock correction — as a draft and a human approves them. The time gain stays large, and the risk of a mis-posting machine disappears.
Does this work with the old REST API?
We build on the GraphQL Admin API, because Shopify treats the REST variant as legacy and new apps use GraphQL. It is also more efficient: the agent fetches exactly the fields it needs in one query instead of chaining several REST calls.
Is Shopify plus MCP GDPR-compliant?
Yes, if the architecture is right. Shopify itself is a US provider, so we use an MCP server in the EU, an AI provider with EU data residency and a DPA, and strict data minimisation. What matters is where customer data flows from your server onwards — there we use only providers with EU data residency and a DPA.
Which AI models work?
All MCP-compatible models: Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot. Switching models later is possible without a new integration.
